現役引退

サークル(実は違うけどw)での怒涛のSection生活に現役生としての休止符が打たれた。
楽しいことばかりじゃなかったけど、自分が選んだ道だし、終わってみて満足はしているとは思う。
悔いがなかったといえば、嘘になるけど。
引退Speechは、Open Course Wareを拡充して大学教育に役立てようというもの。
授業一つ一つをすしネタに喩えたところが売りのつもりである。。

どうせだから、ここに憶えてプレゼンしたやつを貼り付けておきましょうかね。

To Eat “Educational Sushi”

You are eating at the "Educationally-Disadvantaged Sushi" restaurant. “Can I refuse to eat this item?” “No, you can’t. You have to eat it!” “ I don’t wanna eat!!” At this restaurant, you cannot choose and are forced to order specific items. In contrast, in the OCW sushi shop, you can choose lectures as you like as if you are in a sushi-go-around restaurant. Today, I set up the goals of this speech to let you know the existence of OCW (Open Course Ware) and will suggest universities to promote the OCW system.

OCW is an open and free publication of formal course materials through the Internet. If you visit OCW sites of universities such as MIT, Stanford, University of Tokyo and Keio, you can watch various kinds of lectures. Also, you can receive similar services on YouTube and iTunes U as well. For example, MIT has already uploaded more than seven hundred lectures on the web. With just an Internet access and a browser, you can have a right to take many kinds of lectures in the world. These facts show that doors of advanced educations are open to general public more than ever before.

Well then, what is your occupation? I believe most of you are university students. However, because of the innovation of OCW, the position of university is relatively declining. In other words, only the public is receiving benefit from technologies. Increasing number of chances of educations for the public is welcoming news, however, can you wholeheartedly approve of this movement as a college student?

But before asking you that question, I have to ask you an essential one. Are lessons really interesting for you? Things that prevent you from studying might be boring lectures. That means as long as teachers cannot raise students’ motivation, the significance vanishes into smoke. In a crowded class room, many students are chatting or sleeping and the teacher is just speaking. It is far from an interactive lecture which gives students the most benefit. As you remember the scenes of compulsory lessons for freshmen and sophomores, many of them are not fruitful except for some great ones. You are forced to eat awful sushi items without any chances of selection. Reinforcement of OCW means there will be fewer university students who receive advantages compared to the public.

Then how do we deal with this problem? Acceleration of the OCW project can be the answer for you. That is, to make higher quality video lectures and share them among universities. Now, OCW is just for the general public, however, due to copyright problems, all of the materials cannot be uploaded. But, in the academic field, such problems are not so serious. NIME (the National Institute of Multimedia Education)’s second article guarantees as long as it is for school education, they can broadcast copyrighted work. Therefore, “the sushi producing machine” will be like followings. Specification No.1: Record videos of complete lectures and store them to servers of each university. On this point, compulsory lessons and lectures for the mass have a priority to be uploaded. These movies are always available on the students’ accounts such as “keio.jp.” No.2: Share lectures among universities. Since other universities also upload their movies, the number of contents will drastically increase. This means that each university students will have the right to take other universities’ lectures. By comparing lots of kinds of lectures, you can take the better one. Now, the basis for having delicious sushi items is completed.

Here is a sushi-go-around restaurant. You are a customer who came here for tasty sushi. Vivid sushi items go around you. You cannot only see sushi items on plates but also actually try them here. You can fill your stomach with whatever you like even if it is a compulsory lesson. And since you can taste it repeatedly, it is easier to review lessons. I am sure that you will be satisfied with the delicious meal.

You may say it is more difficult to receive feedback if lectures become video style. However, adding the question and answer time after the video lectures, such problems will be easily solved. Moreover, some people may doubt the effectiveness of video style lecture. But, as you can see successes of famous cram schools such as Yozemi and Toshin, you will understand such concern has no significance. Thanks to the acceleration of OCW project, you can maximize your educational effect.

What is more, this machine will also benefit both society and universities themselves. Since more and more lectures are stored digitally, with just removing a part of copyrighted work, they can be uploaded on the Internet for the public. Moreover, that sushi producing machine releases professors from a number of lectures. Universities have two roles. That is, education and research. Thanks to reducing education’s burden on professors, researches of universities will be more active. Uniqueness of universities will come to none, some may say, however, because researches will be great, rather universities will shine. These examples show that the project will increase the competitive power of Japan.

We are living in the world where we can receive advanced education without charge.  To maximize the uniqueness of university students, the sushi-go-around restaurant is needed. And the result will show that there will be more vivid kinds of sushi and you can take whatever you like. The innovative sushi producing machine will change the future of Japan.
